As of January 1, 2025, EU Regulation 2024/573 prohibits the use of refrigerants with a global warming potential (GWP) above 2,500 in most systems. Older VRV systems using R-404A (GWP 3,922) or R-507 are now illegal to operate with virgin refrigerants.

R-22:Prohibited since 2015 for servicing and maintenance.
R-404A/R-507:Prohibited since January 2025 (GWP >2,500).
R-410A:Gradually phased out by 2030.
